I have been having great results with finding information that I need. There is an Edmodo blog that I have been using as a great guide. This week I have been searching youtube for videos on edmodo to get new ideas and tutorials on how to use it. One teacher at my school has been particularly helpful in showing me how she uses it in her class. Since edmodo is a great way to share resources with students I am always on the look out for unique and helpful websites for students.
Do you need to modify your action plan?
I feel that my current action plan is still sound and will help me reach my goals of delivering content to students and improving communication with parents.
What have you learned so far?
So far I have learned about the capabilities of edmodo and ways I might use them. This week I have been experimenting with the poll feature that allows me to pose a question and quickly get responses from students. This would be a great way conduct quick checks for understanding at the beginning or end of class. Also I have started uploading files to the library that I can then post and share with students. I envision using this next year to give students a place to locate assignments they have lost or if they are not in class. I like the idea of posting lessons that we do in class so students can still participate even if they are not in school. I also learned that there is an edmodo ap for Iphones Ipods and Android phones.
What new questions have arisen?
Most of the questions that have arisen for me are about the engagement of my students when I use edmodo. I am really excited to see how they respond and if it helps their understanding of the material we are studying. Also I am also wondering if I am going to need to do a tutorial night to show parents how to use edmodo and all it has to offer them as a communication tool. Finally I am wondering how can I might use edmodo to assess my students. Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer write that threaded discussions are a way to assess students using open-ended responses and edmodo makes it really easy to conduct a threaded discussion(Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009, p 145) .

Hi Nicholas.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you are making great progress in your GAME Plan. It is good that you have a colleague that you are able to communicate with about the website. If I see any relevant videos or articles about edmodo I will be sure to pass them on. The available APPS sound awesome! I also like the idea of posting assignments and lessons for students to access when they are not in class (or forget what they were).
I think a tutorial night sounds like a good idea. Do you plan to use edmodo with all of your classes next year, or are you going to do a trial run in 1-2 classes only? I would be interested to find out how edmodo works.
Good post.

I am thinking about doing it for all five of my classes. At my school we are required to daily update a homework page and the idea of doing that and the edmodo page seems redundant. So I will probably just do edmodo for all my classes and link my homework page to my edmodo page.
ReplyDeleteNick.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense to me, I would feel the same way. Thanks for answering my questions.

Hi Nick,
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tonya, it sounds like you are making great progress on your GAME plan. I do not know much about Edmodo, but it sounds like it will be a wonderful tool for you to use next year.
I would definitely recommend a parent tutorial session. That way you will have your parents on board with what you are doing. It will also give parents the opportunity to be more involved and hopefully stay more active in their child's education. I hope the implementation with all of your classes goes well.

Nicholas,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you are doing an excellent job of using a variety of information sources, colleagues, blogs, and videos, to help you reach your learning goals. I see that you already have a number of plans for using Edmodo to “deliver content to students.” You also explained one way that you will inform parents about Edmodo. However, you stated that one of your goals is for “improving communication with parents.” I am wondering if you have any ideas yet for how you can use Edmodo to help you meet that portion of your goal. Finally, since you mentioned using threaded discussions, I am wondering how much control teachers have in Edmodo for managing security and public access to the site. The more I read about your plans for Edmodo, the more I find myself interested in the possibilities for my own class, so your answers will really help me to evaluate this option for myself. Thanks again for the great suggestions!
Sheri, edmodo is really secure. I can control who has access to the site and in order to view it you have to sign join a group using a key phrase that AI can edit. One of the great things about edmodo is that parents can also join the groups that their students do using a parent account that only allows them to see their child's work and any communications I have with the student. It is definitely worth checking out if you have not looked into it yet.
